If the nerve of your tooth is infected, injured or decayed, our dentist may recommend a root canal treatment to remove the damaged tooth tissue and restore the tooth. This endodontic treatment is an alternative to tooth extraction and is often the preferred treatment as it allows you to continue using your original tooth and restores the full function and appearance of the tooth. It will also not cause problems with adjacent teeth or require you to receive a more complex and invasive treatment to replace the tooth.
Root canal therapy is typically recommended when:
- Decay has reached the pulp of the tooth (the living tissues of the tooth).
- The tooth has sustained injury or another trauma.
- There is an infection or abscess within the tooth or root tip.
When you receive a root canal treatment, our dentist will remove the pulp, nerve tissue, bacteria and any decay inside the tooth. Once these tissues have been removed, we will thoroughly clean the tooth and fill it with a medicated material before sealing it against future decay. We will place a temporary crown over the tooth to protect it while the final crown is being made. Once this crown is made, it will be placed over the tooth to complete your treatment and fully restore the functionality, strength and appearance of the treated tooth.
Most root canals can be completed in two appointments. Our dentist will thoroughly evaluate your tooth and mouth to determine how many visits will be needed to complete your treatment.
Please practice good oral hygiene and visit our dentist and team at Lockwood Family Dental regularly. This will help prevent infection and decay, improve the health of your mouth, and increase the longevity of your root canal treatment.
